Message from NENC Chair, Kyle Price:

“Hi Everyone!

Next Monday, June 3, is our second gathering of North End stakeholders.  Hopefully you can be there.  We will meet in the same place as last time, Trimble Hall at UPS at 6:00.  At this meeting we will take a look at the seven areas of interest/concern identified last time, and we will try to drill down a little further to establish some specific goals that we can all push to achieve over the next year or so.  The process for the meeting will be as follows.  I will post and reintroduce the seven areas we identified last time.  (Those areas are reprinted just below.)  Then people will stand and write more narrow goals for each of those.  Then I will read each of those.  Then people will use sticky dots and place those next to their preferences for what we should pursue as a whole neighborhood.  While doing so, people will also write down their name if they think they will be a “champion” on the issue, basically volunteering to lead the charge.  Then the NENC board will take that information and sift through it at our committee meeting the following Monday, June 10.  Using that info, I will then report back to all of you, and hopefully then we can all get behind a few accomplishable goals for the North End.”

Instead, a combined Board/Committees meeting will be held on the 2nd Monday, September 10th.  We will be meeting at the usual Committees meeting location – Tacoma Police Department Sector 2 Substation.  The Substation is located between Kandle Park and the Gonyea Boys & Girls Club on N. 26th, just west of Stevens Street.

Board Action will be taken at the September 10th meeting, as well as Committees discussion.

For 2012 the timeline and dates/deadline for notification, posting, and the Board election are:

1)      Notification of Board election 60 days prior to election date – by September 13th 2012 (posted August 13th, 2012)

2)      Candidates must register by 40^th day prior to election – by September 27th 2012. There are 7 positions available in this year’s election.

3)      Posting of registered candidates 30 days prior to election  – on October 13th

4)      Election Date – on November 12th 2012

May 7, 2012 – City Services Expo

Mayor Strickland and Members of the Tacoma City Council,

I am writing to you on behalf of the North End Neighborhood Council.  We have reviewed your proposed cuts to the Tacoma Police and Fire Departments.

We are not in favor of making any cuts to these services which are absolutely essential to the health, safety, and quality of life in our City.

The North End Neighborhood Council believes that it is the purpose and function of Government to first provide Police, Fire, and emergency services to its Citizens.  Those services should be the last to be cut, not among the first.

At our Board Meeting yesterday evening, a motion was passed unanimously to urge our Mayor and City Council Members to look to the reduction of all other City services – and if necessary the elimination of City Departments – before any reduction in Police, Fire, and other emergency services is considered.

By acclamation, the North End Neighborhood Council voted to elect all 8 candidates to each position.
