The City of Tacoma Office of Environmental Policy and Sustainability

What does climate change mean for Tacoma?
“Tacoma is now experiencing extreme weather and worsening environmental and public health
conditions as a result of climate change. Conditions will worsen unless urgent climate action is taken.
Expected local climate impacts are listed below:” (From the OEPS website)

• More very hot days • Reduced snow pack • Lower summer stream flow • Higher winter streamflow
• Sea level rise • Ocean acidification • Stresses on salmon and, shellfish and other species
• Reduced recreation • More wildfires and smoke • Worse air quality • Increased flooding
• Reduced agricultural yield

Protect and Extend Tacoma’s Tree Canopy

Cultivating a large and healthy urban forest is one of the most important ways we can mitigate for
climate change. Yet, Tacoma’s 20% tree canopy ranks lower than any other city in the Puget Sound
region! Our City Council promised in 2009 and again in 2019 to increase our tree canopy to 30% by
2030. No increase has been made. Thus, we are not on track to achieve this goal.

We must act quickly! If you agree that we need to protect and extend Tacoma’s tree canopy,
please read and sign our petition that urges our City Council to update our current 1927 Tree
Ordinance with Tree Ordinance, TMC 9.19.030 The Tacoma Urban Forest Friends online petition:

Urgent Deadline: The City Council will be making their final decision about passing the new Tree
Ordinance at their meetings at 5:00 on Wed., Dec. 5 and 12. We hope you will write letters in support
of the new Ordinance or join these important meetings in person.

Support the Tacoma Tree Foundation

TTF is busy with another exciting tree planting season! This great organization “partners with people who want
more trees in their neighborhoods as a way of improving quality of life, as well as human and environmental
health”. They sponsor a fun variety of tree events including tree planting and plant giveaways, a variety of
docent lead neighborhood tree walks and interesting webinars. Please go to their calendar of events to sign up
for one or more of these great events: www.tacomatreefoundation.org

$30 Off Tree Coupon for All Pierce County Residents!

$30. off coupons are valid at participating local tree retailers during the program season, October through
March 31. You can enjoy the benefits of a beautiful tree while helping Tacoma increase it’s tree canopy. Go to
the City of Tacoma’s website to learn how to apply for a tree coupon. cityoftacoma.org/treecoupon

Shopping Locally Supports Sustainability

This holiday season, we hope you will visit our local business districts: 6th Avenue, Stadium, Old Town and
Proctor. Shopping locally helps to reduce many negative environmental impacts such as pollution, congestion
and habitat loss. Shopping within our nearby neighborhoods also supports our local economy.
