Baby It’s Hot Outside! How to cool off?
“More Trees, Please!”You are invited to the North End Neighborhood Council MeetingMonday, August 1st, 6:00 PM
We’re experiencing yet another scorching hot summer in our region. So right now, who wouldn’t want to sit under a beautiful, shady tree? But cool shade is not the only benefit that trees provide – they help to clean our air by capturing and storing carbon dioxide, they also produce oxygen, beautify our neighborhoods, provide shelter for wildlife, anchor soil and prevent erosion, create higher property values, protect against the wind, keep our houses cooler in the summer, reduce noise, create healthier waterways, retain thousands of dust particles and the list goes on! Yet unfortunately, Tacoma’s 20% total tree canopy ranks as the lowest in all of the Puget Sound area! How can we as citizens change that?By attending our NENC meeting, you will be able to listen to two very important presentations from our City’s tree canopy specialists: Mike Carey, the City of Tacoma’s Urban Forest Program Manager and Dr. Lowell Wyse, the Executive Director of the Tacoma Tree Foundation. Together, they will discuss the importance of proactive planning for our urban forest, in order to transition Tacoma from “The Lumber Capital of the World” to a healthier environment for all by advocating to increase our tree canopy to 30% as well as to maintain and protect the large mature trees that grace our City. They will also tell us how to obtain wonderful trees for our own yard and neighborhood for the upcoming Fall planting time.We hope you’ll spread the word to others and join us either in person or on zoom for this very important meeting next Monday! For more information, please go to our website at www.nenc.orgImportant to note, that we’re now meeting hybrid, both online and in person (at the University of Puget Sound). There’s nothing like being in person again, so if you’re able please join us on campus. We’d love to have you include your voice in Tacoma’s North End!
Here are the full details for both online and in person, we hope to see you there!
