- Connect Tacoma is a measure approved by the City Council and will be included on the primary election ballot in August. If approved, the measure would authorize a 1.5% increase in utility-earnings tax and an increase in property tax of $0.20 per $1,000 of assessed value.

| Connect Tacoma – Safe Streets and Sidewalks Levy “Investing in Tacoma’s Streets, Sidewalks and Safety” Proposition 1, August 4, Ballot Measure This Levy is a proposed 10-year funding measure focused on improving transportation safety; maintain streets, and expanding access across our community. If approved by voters, the levy would generate an estimated total of $200 million; along with an estimated $120 million in grant funds and partnerships commitments. If you see a street tree that is being pruned or cut down, please call 311 to ask if a permit was issued for it. Our City has the worse urban tree canopy in the Puget Sound, only 21% versus a minimum of 30%. We need tree shade to cool our streets and sidewalks. And to clean our air through photosynthesis. Even mature trees may need one or two good soakings a month during the summer. Young trees require15-20 gallons a week, April-Sept. for at least 3 years. Mulch around the base of a tree helps to retain moisture and suppress weed growth. Remember that new trees won’t survive the summer without extra watering.
