The Historic Cushman Street Fair was a huge success!
Thank you to everyone who attended this wonderful community event. Despite Mother Nature deciding to show off with a stormy first day of fall, we enjoyed all that the street fair had to offer: welcome speeches by our City Council members, Bliss ice cream, The Balloon Lady, a kids’ art booth, lively music by the Happy Sinners and the PLU Steel Drum Band, a variety of great booths, and TNT Espresso and min-donuts.

We’d like to thank everyone who made this event possible: Council Members John Hines, Sarah Rumbaugh, Olgy Diaz and Deputy Mayor Kristina Walker.  Lauren Hoogkamer (PNPP Principal Planner), all of our NENC board members and many other awesome volunteers. A big thank you goes to former mayor Bill Baarsma for his presentation about the fascinating history of the Cushman substation. Also, our terrific Master of Ceremonies, Chris Staudinger from Pretty Gritty Tours, provided the narration for three very interesting tours around the Cushman site.

Stay tuned to learn more about the future plans for the Cushman and Adams substations. The City has hired a consultant firm to reach out to our community in 2024 for ideas about how to repurpose the site. Perhaps one day, it will become a community center surrounded by a beautiful park, complete with a playground, picnic area and even a pickle ball court!
