Understanding the 2018 Annual Amendments – Part 1 – Introduction

To help our North End neighbors understand the process and details about these applications, NENC volunteers are working on a series of posts that will appear over the next several days. Click here to view a list of all posts.

You’ll see how the applications under consideration might impact or include parts of the North End, and others that relate to specific areas or the city as a whole.

Planning Services Manager Brian Boudet explains: “A Plan or Code Amendment is the process through which the City considers changes, additions, and updates to the One Tacoma Comprehensive Plan, and Land Use Regulatory Code. Periodic review and evaluation are
important in order to ensure that the One Tacoma Plan and the implementing regulations maintain their effectiveness. The intent of the amendment process is to review all of these changes simultaneously, where appropriate, so that the cumulative effects can be considered.”

What happened to NENC’s proposal?

In 2017 the NENC board submitted an application to the City of Tacoma requesting formal design review for buildings in Mixed Use Centers (view the application here). NENC’s application is not part of the 2018 Amendments process. Planning staff wrote NENC to explain:

Design Review is an already approved program. It is not part of the annual amendment cycle, but it is part of the work plan for this year. You will see movement on that issue in the way of Council Committee meetings, Planning Commission, and community outreach as soon as we kick off. We will keep you apprised and notify you once we have specific dates in place.
